THIS month sees the start of exams in colleges across Pune. Students have awakened to their true calling — studies. Many have made a conscious decision to take a step down from socialising, and night-long parties have been replaced by night-long cramming sessions. Megha George, an SYBA student confirms, "I have been working, so I had no time to study throughout the year.
Now, I have taken leave from work for 18 days, before my exams are slated to begin. These 18 days will be the most crucial for me. I will have to study for at least seven hours a day, to make up for the entire year. So, last Saturday was the last time I partied with my friends. It was like an icebreaker before the exams. Now, there is no looking back till the exams are over."
For most students who are backing out of parties or anything that poses as a hindrance in following their daily study schedule, watching World Cup on TV is their form of recreation. "My mother has cut the Internet connection at home, as I used to surf the Net all the time. Now, I don't go out that often, even to meet my friends, as I have to concentrate on my studies. Thankfully, my mother hasn't cut the cable connection. The World Cup is my only recreation as of now," affirms Anand Patil, who is studying in TYBcom and is also an avid cricket enthusiast.Yuvraj Chavan, a student of Foreign Trade, who is also following the proceedings of the World Cup regularly says, "I have been studying seven hours a day and have taken a break from partying and movies for the next two months. I will get out of the house only in the evenings for a couple of hours to meet my friends. But, now with the World Cup going on, I'd rather sit at home and watch matches than go out every time I take a study break." Students have already started to feel the stress just before the exams, as they are forced to cut on recreation and spend more time with their books, than with their friends. But Tejal Joshi, a third year student of fashion designing feels otherwise. "It is necessary to know how to balance your social life and studies. I can't study the whole day long and not go out. One needs a break from studies. Some breathing space helps me combat the effects of exam stress. So, going out for an hour or so to have a cup of coffee with your friends is alright. Parties and movies though will have to wait till the exams end." Well, it's just a matter of a couple of months. Till then make text books your best friends and best of luck!
